Running from 20 – 27 November, Cartoons Underground, Southeast Asia’s first animation festival, will mark 10 years with an array of programmes aimed at encouraging more Singaporeans to enjoy, appreciate and make their own animated movies.

The festival will feature four film programmes, panel discussions, workshops for aspiring animators, special feature screenings and international competition films vying for the annual Golden Durians awards for excellence in animation.

Highlights of its film programmes include films from students at Nanyang Technological University and LASALLE College of the Arts, and a retrospective collection of the best movies shown at Cartoons Underground across its decade-long long.

Three online panel discussions will be hosted, all focused on those interested in pursuing careers in animation.

“Developing the animation industry: The role of education” (23 Nov, 8pm) looks at how Singapore’s animation industry can bring on the next generation of talent. “Beyond
Animation: What’s next for creative graduates?” (21 Nov, 2pm) brings together animation
graduates who’ve built successful careers. “Future of monetizing in animation” (25 Nov, 8pm)
looks at the ways the new digital economy lets animators make money from connecting
directly or indirectly with audiences.

Meanwhile, CU’s partner *SCAPE, an organisation that supports the development of Singaporean youths, is hosting a four-day story development lab over two weekends to impart practical skills that will help aspiring animators to up their game when they conceive, develop and pitch their movie ideas to decision-makers.
