Following its first film showcase of the year in April, the Singapore Film Society (SFS) returns this July with a presentation of two award-winning films from Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kenya — Academy Awards nominee from Golden Bear winner Jasmila Zbanic Quo Vadis, Aida? and winner of the Editing Award for World Cinema – Documentary at the Sundance festival Softie.

Ticket sales for the showcase will begin 30 June via the Singapore Film Society website.

Attendance to SFS Showcase #2 is FREE for SFS Fam members (SFS Friend and SFS Kopi & Movi members get discounts of up to 50% off) and open to all (both SFS members and non-members are welcome). Tickets are priced at $15 (inclusive of GST) for the public.

“SFS Showcase #2: Politics & Humanity”, the second of a continuing series of curated film programmes extending into the third and fourth quarters of the year, looks to bring audiences to witness the human side of politics through two deeply personal stories set in volatile socio-political environments.

Quo Vadis, Aida? details the United Nations Humanitarian Crisis that unfolded during the Bosnian War in the 1990s. Documentary Softie tells of one family man’s dream to contest in the Kenyan elections, which has had a long history of corruption and violence.

Eternality Tan, Vice Chair and Programming Director of SFS, shares his thoughts on curating SFS Showcase #2, “Politics often has a negative connotation — the dark and dirty world of politics as it were — and in cinema, we are often drawn to these aspects of intrigue, for better or worse. However, an understanding of how politics greatly impact people, especially families who simply aspire for a good, peaceful life without conflict or trauma, is even more critical today, particularly when the world is still reeling from the never-ending COVID-19 pandemic.”
