Indonesian filmmaker Yosep Anggi Noen has won the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival’s Asian Cinema Observer Recommendation Award on 20 November 2019 with his film The Science of Fictions. The film tells the tale of a solitary farmer, Siman, who gets his tongue chopped off after stumbling into a film crew staging and shooting a fake moon landing.

This year’s panel, comprising of Hong Kong’s He Si Ying, Singapore’s David Lee, and Taiwan’s Zhan Zheng De, praised the film for its experimental and imaginative spirit, and compared it to wild performance art.

The Science of Fictions has been around the international film festival circuit and had previously won the Boccalino d’Oro for Best Film at the Locarno International film festival. The film will be screening at this year’s Singapore International Film Festival. Get your tickets here.

Yosep Anggi Noen’s short film Ballad of Blood and Two White Buckets also won the SeaShorts Award at this year’s SeaShorts Film Festival, among many other accolades. Check out our coverage of SeaShorts here.
