In a historic 20th edition of Singapore Writers Festival (SWF), which is organised by the National Arts Council (NAC), several classics and long lost gems of Singapore literature take centre stage in its annual adaptation platform, Utter. The seventh edition of Utter is a special one, celebrating some of the best of Singapore literary output written before 1986 ““ the year SWF was founded as Writers’ Week ““ and their potential to be adapted into different media and across languages. This gives everyone the opportunity to experience, appreciate and be inspired by our Singapore authors through film as a medium of storytelling.

In order to give audiences fresh perspectives and a deeper understanding of our home-grown authors, the remarkable short fiction and poetry of four highly-distinguished writers-two Cultural Medallion recipients J.M. Sali, and Tan Swie Hian, the comparatively less-known Gregory Nalpon, and former deputy prime minister S. Rajaratnam ““ have been selected. They have been adapted with nuance and sensitivity by veterans K. Rajagopal and Lee Thean-jeen into live-action short films, and with boundless imagination by Henry and Harry Zhuang, and Jerrold Chong into animation shorts.

The four completed Utter shorts will be screened in a showcase to the public for the first time at GV Suntec from 29 September to 1 October in three screening sessions. Each screening session will be followed by an extended post-screening dialogue with the filmmakers present.
