Stephen Chow’s ‘Mermaid’ Leads Chinese Box Office To US$101 Million New Year’s Day Bonanza1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minuteDirector Stephen Chow’s reign as the king of the Chinese box office was reaffirmed on Monday as his new comedy The Mermaid led the PRC’s New Year’s Day box office to a record-setting RMB 664 million (US$ 101 million) gross, a 78 percent increase over last year’s record.
Despite ripples of doubt caused by the somber tone of its second official trailer, The Mermaid splashed up a massive RMB 276 million debut (US$ 42 million, including just under $1 million from midnight screenings) to set a new single-day record for locally made films. Only Furious 7 has ever scored a higher single-day total in China, with its $63.2 million opening day last April. Close on the tail of the fish comedy were two local sequels, The Monkey King 2 with $26 million, and The Man From Macau 3 with $25 million.
