An inaugural National Youth Film Awards (NYFA) will kickstart to shine the spotlight on Singaporean youths who excel in film and animation, setting a benchmark of nationwide excellence in the local filmmaking scene.

This new initiative is a joint undertaking by Sinema Media, and *SCAPE, a non-profit organisation for youths, to offer recognition and mentorship opportunities for talented student filmmakers. Award categories are specially crafted to merit film and animation students who demonstrate outstanding capabilities and flair during their course of study at Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs).

Mr. Callistus Chong, Director of School of Design & Media, Institute of Technical Education says, “NYFA will serve as an important platform for our film production students to have their craft and skills recognized. In making a good film, the contribution of every member in the production team counts, and students get to see their synergy and teamwork that ITE often emphasises, at play here.”

A panel of esteemed jury members from the local film industry including Royston Tan (Chuan Pictures), Jack Neo (J Team), Ng Say Yong (mm2 Entertainment), and Freddie Yeo (Infinite Studios), will identify the most outstanding youth talents in 11 award categories, with equal recognition given to different filmmaking departments to acknowledge the importance of each arm of a film production team.

With the support of the jury members, winners of the key awards such as Best Picture, Best Direction, and Best Cinematography will also have opportunities to enter into apprenticeship with the presenting media companies.

Ng Say Yong, Chief Content Officer of mm2 Entertainment believes that NYFA can open paths for young filmmaking talents to make headway in our film industry. He says, “mm2 Entertainment believes in developing new talents to create fresh and relevant content, especially youths who have their ways of looking at the world. With our support, we hope NYFA will help talented youths make their mark in the local film industry.”

The competition is open for submissions from now until 2359 hours (GMT +8) on Friday, 15 May 2015. Shortlisted nominees will be announced on 29 May 2015. A series of filmmaking workshops and screenings will be held in the months of June and July, culminating in the Award Ceremony on Sunday, 2 August 2015, with Mr. Lawrence Wong, Minister of Culture, Community and Youth, gracing the event.
