One of the city’s oldest film and television studio, Bharat Laxmi Studio, was on Monday gutted in a major fire. This century-old film studio in Tollygunge has witnessed production of numerous Bengali films and recently TV serials.

The fire, which broke out at 8.55 am, first engulfed three separate units in the studio premises. All five floors were reduced to ashes. The fire soon engulfed slums in the back, creating panic. It took two hours and 15 fire-tenders to control the fire. Two persons received minor injuries trying to put off the flames.

“We are uncertain about the cause of the fire. Since there were numerous inflammable objects like foam, sofas, plywood and asbestos sheets, the fire spread rapidly. We will be referring the matter to the Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) for identifying the origin,” said Ashok Biswas, Station Fire Officer.

Currently three Bengali tele-serials were being shot in the studio and they have incurred heavy damages. “The amount may run into several lakhs of rupees,” said Yudhajit, a production manger of these serials.
