New Wave Cinema Surfs Into Bali1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minuteFour years ago, a group of people met in Bali and quickly realized they had two things in common: their love of cinema and their passion for surfing. It didn’t take long before Ombak Bali – an annual festival of surf-related films – was born. The fourth edition of the festival kicks off on Wednesday.
Ombak Bali, or Bali Wave, is currently the only surf film festival in Southeast Asia.
“There are other [surf] film festivals around the world, like in Hawaii, Spain and Brazil, which are very successful too,” said Jolinde Liebre, who has been involved in the festival from the start. “But Indonesia has some of the best waves in the world, so we figured we should hold a festival here.”
Liebre said the festival’s venue, La Plancha, a new restaurant on Seminyak Beach, was perfect for the occasion. This was exactly how surf films should be watched, she said, “under the stars, in the sand and next to the ocean.”
