Radio and TV licence scrapped with immediate effect1 min read
Reading Time: < 1 minuteFINANCE MINISTER Tharman Shanmugaratnam said on Friday at his Budget speech that the radio and television licence (RTV) will be abolished with immediate effect.
His announcement drew loud gasps from the other members of Parliament.
‘The license fees are losing their relevance,’ added Mr Shanmugaratnam.
The fees collected are used to fund public service broadcast content. In 2009, the Media Development Authority (MDA) collected $132.5 million in RTV fees.
