Reading Time: < 1 minuteTheatrical audiences in South Korea dropped last year to 148 million from 156 million in 2009, a decline of 5%. The figure was also the lowest in five years.
The data from multiplex operator CJ-CGV also shows the market share taken by Korean-made films was 47%. That is down from 2009’s 49%, but a significant improvement on 2008’s recent low-point of 43%.
Taking together the lower attendance numbers and the reduced market share, Korean films sold 7.35 million fewer tickets last year. Korean ticket sales dropped from 76.6 million to 69.3 million.
Total admissions for non-Korean films scarcely budged with ticket sales of 79.7 million in 2010 compared with 79.1 million in 2009.
