Reading Time: < 1 minuteShim Hyung-rae’s English-language The Last Godfather starring Harvey Keitel led the South Korean office over the New Year weekend.
The period slapstick comedy made W7.0 billion over three days and an estimated W9.0 billion on 1.2 million admissions since opening 29 Dec 2010.
Godfather stars Shim as Young-gu, the long-lost son of Keitel’s mafia boss Don Carini in 1950s New York. Carini’s gang trains dumb Young-gu in the art of being a godfather so that their boss can retire.
Young-gu is Shim’s trademark comic persona, which he made popular on television in the 1980s and previously brought to the big screen in several movies he directed and starred in during the 1990s.
