Takamine – born Hirayama Hideko in Hakodate, Hokkaido, on 27 Mar 1924 – made her debut as an actress in Nomura Hotei’s silent film Mother when she was five-years-old.
As a child actress, she also worked with Shimazu Yasujiro, Ozu Yasujiro, Gosho Heinosuke and Yamamoto Kajiro during the 1930s, the first “Golden Age” of Japanese cinema.
As an adult, she regularly worked with Kinoshita Keisuke and Naruse Mikio, appearing in most of their key films during Japanese cinema’s second “Golden Age” of the 1950s and 1960s.
