Over two days the film made ¥183.7 million ($2.2 million) on 312 screens nationwide.
The highly-anticipated film, which premiered in Venice, is adapted from Murakami Haruki’s 1987 novel whose atypical realistic style is credited with boosting the author to literary stardom in Japan.
Norwegian Wood, which is represented internationally by Fortissimo Films, opens in Taiwan this weekend through Serenity Entertainment and, later this month, in Hong Kong through Edko.
