In 2004, box office reached a record ¥210.9 billion. Analysts at Japan’s Nikkei newspaper estimates that box office receipts could cross ¥220 billion in 2010.
3-D films dominated the box office charts this year. Avatar was number one for nine consecutive weeks, Alice in Wonderland for seven, and local action adventure Umizaru 3 for six.
A total of three local films crossed $10m in their opening weekends, Umizaru 3, animation The Borrower Arrietty and Bayside Shakedown 3: Set the Guys Loose!.
