Its success pushed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 into runner-up place in the charts on its third week in cinemas.
The live-action adaptation of the classic animation series is directed by Yamazaki Takashi and stars Kimura Takuya, Kuroki Meisa and Yanagiba Toshiro.
The audience skewed heavily to older audiences, with one report claiming that 44% of audiences were in their 40s. The animated television series premiered in 1974.
