Raintree joins Irresistible Films with Edko & Avex1 min read
Reading Time: 2 minutesMediaCorp Raintree Pictures is now the third partner of Irresistible Films, a film production fund, alongside Hong Kong producer Bill Kong’s Edko Films and Japan’s Avex Group.
Contributing to the total fund of $25 million, the fund aims to invest in four to six Asian films per year, with budgets ranging from $1 to $3 million specifically tailored for new filmmakers making their first, second or third film”This will be an important platform for new Asian film-makers to launch their careers.’ Raintree’s managing director Daniel Yun said focus on commercial films, of budgets less than US$3 million and we will greenlight a project only if there is a guaranteed return of at least half of the production budget before the cameras start rolling,” said Kong, best known as the producer behind Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero.
Irresistible Films has already greenlit two films, including Claustrophobia by Ivy Ho, which debuts at the currently ongoing Tokyo Film Festival, and stars Ekin Cheng and Karena Lam.
Raintree brings with it the production and distribution outfits, along with a distribution reach into South East Asia in addition to China and Japan.
In the cards for Irresistible is a Lee Chi-Ngai-helmed comicbook adaptation entitled Dance Subaru, a story revolving around a ballerina who stays true to her dreams despite the odds. Starring Meisa Kuroki, Sano Miku, Korean music sensation Ara and veteran Japanese actress Momoi Kaori, the film is slated for a 2009 release.
Meanwhile, Raintree is separately in talks with director Wayne Wang to direct a historical drama 1965, covering events during this turbulent period in Singapore’s past.
